iAcademy: Meet The Mentors

Sunday, September 04, 2011

I attended a talk yesterday entitled - Meet The Mentors: Lulu Tan-Gan and Robi Lolin "Fashion In Practice" at iAcademy in Makati City. It was a Saturday and the traffic was so unexpected. We were a bit late but thank God there were still two decent vacant seats :) Lulu Tan-Gan and Robi Lolin mainly talked about their experiences and the do's and don'ts in the fashion business.

Mood boards are very important to get inspired:

You need to learn how to draw. Robi Lolin said: "If you don't know how to draw... loser ka" ☺ He shared that the photos in the slide were his students and on their first day of classes, they were asked to draw figures right away. He told us that their first illustrations looked like aliens! Haha :)

Lulu Tan-Gan told us that learning how to sew and learn pattern making are a must. Lulu Tan-Gan also shared that nowadays, there are a lot of pattern makers, sewers, cutters and etc but you what if one day they decide to leave you and you don't know how to sew? It is much better to trust yourself with your work than trust somebody else. "When you create, you express yourself."

Fashion sales: there are a lot of ways to advertise, for example, fashion shows.. but you need to be consistent or else, the people will get bored. "Once you set a plan, you need to be consistent."

Careers in Fashion:
Fashion designers: the ones who create the collections
Marketers/Promoters: responsible for selling the collections
Fashion technicians: manufactures the clothes
Fashion journalism: bloggers, magazines, newspapers
Accessories designers: responsible for finishing the look
Buying/Merchandising: sell the creations to the consumers

After the talk, I was very fortunate to meet Lulu Tan-Gan :)

We also toured the fourth floor of iAcademy which is under construction because they are working on a workplace for the season 3 of Project Runway Philippines :)

It was such a nice experience and I am planning to take some classes here in the future ☺
